Widely regarded as one of the best spots in Europe for surfing and bodyboarding, it has hosted numerous rounds of the ASP surfing World Tour Championships. It’s 2 km north of Ericeira, a small town considered one of the four World Surfing Reserves, together with Malibu and Santa Cruz, in California, and Manly Beach, in Australia.
Sitting in a valley between high cliffs and right by the river mouth, this amphitheatre-shaped stretch of sand offers plenty of room for sunbathing and excellent views to watch the waves and marvel at the surfers. The impressive views from the clifftop offer a unique sunset experience.
The beach bars nearby offer an upbeat ambience, with a great atmosphere and usually packed with friendly people keen to party.
At Ribeira d’Ilhas there are surf schools that provide everything you may need, from accommodation to services such as rentals and repairs.Lifeguards patrol it during the summer season and there’s access to people with reduced mobility. Plenty of toilets and showers available, as well as a car park.
